DIP stands for Dual in Line Package which means electrically conductive pins are arranged in two rows in through hole form in this package. The pins are spaced 0.1 inches apart to fit a standard breadboard or perfboard and the two rows are spaced 0.3 inches apart to fit a standard DIP socket. It consists of 8 Single Pole Single Throw (SPST) switches which can be toggled between ON and OFF by slide action. It can be used to configure computer peripherals such as modems, hard drives, and sound cards. They are also found on motherboards and expansion cards. They are used in place of jumpers because they are easier to operate and provide more reliable solution. Product Description
To use the 8 position DIP switch you just need to solder the pins on your PCB use a DIP holder and use this as a simple ON/OFF switch of the line in which the switch is connected. Care should be taken not to use it for application requiring more than 100 mA of current.
