The HC595 is the 16-pin, 8-bit Serial-In Serial/Parallel-Out Shift Register. This chip is great for reducing the number of pins required by your LED Cube or other hardware intensive project when you have an Arduino Uno or similar controller board with low number of i/o pins than your project needs.
