The TIP122 is a Darlington Transistor that has a very high gain of up to 1000. The Darlington pair transistor actually contains two transistors in which emitter of one transistor is connected to the base of the other transistor which means there is approximately doubling of Base to Emitter voltage of the Darlington Pair Transistor. It also has high voltage withstand capabilities. These transistors are used in an application where high amplification is required. They are commonly used in Power Audio Amplifiers and can be easily controlled by 5V Microcontrollers like Arduino, PIC, AVR, etc. because of their low base threshold voltage.

Product Description
The DC Current Gain of the Darlington Pair Transistor is very high i.e. about 1000, yet they are very easy to control with any 5V GPIO pin of the microcontroller. Connect the base terminal of the transistor to the 5V GPIO pin of the controller or V supply line of the Digital Circuit but care should be taken as it will need 120mA of base current if you are operating in high gain region. For other NPN transistors, check BC547 BJT, 2N2222A, 2N2222, and 2N3902 BJT.
